Bangladesh is currently facing political turmoil following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid escalating protests. The unrest, which began in opposition to a controversial government job quota system, grew into broader demands for her resignation after 15 years of rule. Students, frustrated with high unemployment and government suppression, led these protests. Hasina fled to India, leaving the nation in political uncertainty with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus heading an interim government (The Independent).

Artisans in Bangladesh, including those working with SO JUST SHOP, are facing significant challenges due to the ongoing political instability. Curfews, widespread unrest, and restrictions on movement have disrupted their ability to work consistently. BaSE artisans, who create our jute and palm leaf products, Christmas cards and decorations from upcycled cotton, have had their work hours drastically cut due to safety concerns and limited access to their workshops. The stress of living in such a volatile environment has compounded these difficulties, making it hard to meet production schedules for both local and international clients, including SO JUST SHOP's major partners (including World Wildlife Fund).

Despite these obstacles, production has continued, albeit slower than normal and we remains hopeful about the future, working closely with artisans to ensure they can continue their craft while maintaining safety. The hope is that as political tensions ease, artisans will be able to return to work more regularly and production can return to normal.  New products and old favourites are trickling back into stock and we should be ready in time for Christmas.
